Traditional Skills used to Recreate a Piece of History
One of the UK’s few remaining master coopers has used his traditional wooden caskmaking skills to produce a replica of a medieval water tankard which will be presented to the Water Conservators Company in the City of London.
Jonathan Manby, master cooper at T & R Theakston’s brewery in Masham, North Yorkshire, was commissioned to make a replica of the cone shaped vessels typical of those used for hundreds of years by water-bearers to distribute water in the City of London before the days of piped water.
