There is a growing sense of excitement across the Country as preparations are well underway for HM The King’s Coronation. For many of us this will be the first such event in living memory; Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth having reigned for over 70 years. With spring on its way and the days beginning to lengthen again, for the first time in three years we can begin to raise our horizons to a year ahead without the unwelcome accompaniment of the pandemic and the immediate after effects of the outbreak of war in Eastern Europe. The Coronation at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May will be a moment of national unity and an uplifting source of great pride and joy for many.
Established in 1827, our company has of course lived through many coronations in the past, eight in nine reigns to be precise, (Edward VIII having reigned but never crowned) and on each occasion, no doubt, a celebratory brew to commemorate would have been brewed by one of my Theakston ancestors. The Coronation of HM King Charles III will be no exception and we have developed a recipe and commenced brewing of a very special ale to mark the new reign.
We have named it Crowning Glory. It is a 4.2% ABV amber ale brewed using the finest Pearl Barley, grown in Yorkshire with the addition of some wonderful new varieties of traditional English hops, Admiral and Pilgrim, aptly linking tradition with a new-era modern twist! The beer has a honey and blackcurrant aroma with subtle, spicy cedar pine-bitter undertones, the perfect way to celebrate Their Majesties crowning moment and another proud chapter in our Country’s long history.
